This selection fills a rare niche, a large-growing, reliably hardy yellow-flowering magnolia with blooms that open simultaneously with the emerging leaves, protecting the flowers from late frosts that damage the early-blooming pink and white magnolias.

Fragrant yellow flowers appear at the ends of twigs simultaneously with the leaves, uniquely late timing protects from frost damage
Narrow pointed leaves, up to 25 cm long, provide a bold-textured foliage display all season
Infrequent bunches of green seed cucumbers ripen red in late summer, attracting ground birds
Develops a pyramidal form when young, maturing to a rounded crown on a straight trunk

Growing & Maintenance Tips

Unlike most magnolia, which are grown as a multi-stemmed form, Yellow Bird magnolia usually has a straight trunk. Grows best in a slightly acidic soil and is intolerant of drought, excessive moisture, and pollution. Any pruning should be done soon after flowering, to allow the plant enough time to reset buds for the following year.
