Daleais in the legume family, which means it is capable of capturing nitrogen from the air, and storing it near the roots. Drought-tolerant once mature, it is adaptable to many soil types.

Notes

Native to central Canada, including Ontario,however, likely extinct in the wild areas in Ontario. Dalea candidais a host for the larvae of Dogface butterfly. Not a true clover, so "prairie-clover" is the more correct common name.
