- Conical at a young age, becoming broadly oval with maturity
- Narrow, oblong leaves are smooth-margined, glossy, and dark green
- Insignificant flowers (catkins) are followed by rounded acorns
- Acorns do not ripen until the following year
- Fall foliage is a yellow-brown to red-brown
- Commonly used for specimen, naturalizing
- Grows best in full sun
