Shaina Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum &

Shaina Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Shaina'

This selection originated as a witch's broom mutation on a Bloodgood maple, it inherited the parent's deep red colour and fall display but produces extraordinarily tight, short-lobed foliage and grows at roughly a third the rate, creating a compact specimen of exceptional density.

  • Leaves have a shortened centre lobe giving a distinctively dense, compact leaf cluster close to the stems
  • Very tight, dark red leaves deepen to purple by midsummer while retaining excellent colour
  • Crimson to orange fall colour on a plant that stays under 1.5 m
  • Excellent for bonsai or as a miniature specimen in courtyard gardens

Growing & Maintenance Tips
Best planted in a well-drained soil with high organic matter. Japanese maples are grown as specimen trees or multi-stemmed plants. Any pruning should be done in summer. Mulch well, but avoid heaping mulch against the stem. Most cultivars need full sun or light afternoon shade.
