Growing & Maintenance Tips

Elderberries grow well in a medium moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Prune out weakened stems in early spring and cut to the ground every 2 years to encourage new, denser growth. Fruit production is increased when planted with another cultivar.

Notes

Elderberries are very high in vitamin C and often used in cold remedies. Ripe cooked berries and flowers are edible and commonly used in syrups, wines, and preserves; raw berries, bark, leaves, and roots contain cyanogenic glycosides and are toxic — always cook before consuming. The botanical name for Kent Elderberry has been updated from Elderberry x 'Kent' to Sambucus canadensis 'Kent'.
