Ostrya virginiana

A native ironwood with pendulous hop-like fruit clusters and good fall colour, suited to naturalized plantings.

Upright, rounded to oval crown
Reddish-brown male flowers and greenish female flowers precede the leaves
Dark green birch-like leaves increase in size toward the end of a twig
Fall foliage is pale yellow, with an early leaf drop, while a few leaves stay on
Hop-like seeds sometimes persist through the winter
Commonly used for specimen, naturalizing
Grows best in full sun to shade to partial shade
