Indian Steel Grass, Indian Steel Wood Grass

Sorghastrum nutans 'Indian Steel'

Indian Steel Grass is the ornamental form of a true North American native prairie grass, its blue-green blades and striking reddish-bronze downy flower spikes in August provide a naturalistic beauty that refined cultivated grasses rarely achieve.

  • Blue-green grass blades turn warm bronze in fall, providing a rich seasonal transition
  • Reddish-bronze downy flower spikes appear in August, an unusually early and distinctive bloom for a warm-season grass
  • Flower stalks rise well above the foliage, creating strong vertical structure
  • Tolerates drought once established, well-suited to prairie-style and low-maintenance plantings

Growing & Maintenance Tips
Grows best in full sun to partial shade in an average to dry soil. This grass can become floppy if the soil is too rich and moist. It can tolerate heat and drought but needs moisture during long hot spells. Should be cut down to about 12 cm above ground level in the spring.
