Henry's Garnet Sweetspire

Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet'

This selection is the most reliably fall-colouring native shrub for partially shaded sites: its leaves turn brilliant red in fall, frequently persisting into winter, on a fragrant-flowered, arching shrub that tolerates moist soils where most colourful fall shrubs won't perform.

  • Fragrant white florets on narrow panicles in May–June
  • Dark green leaves turn brilliant red in fall and frequently persist into winter, among the best fall colour of any shade-tolerant shrub
  • Suckers freely, producing a dense, multi-stemmed arching shrub that naturalizes well
  • Tolerates moist and poorly-drained soils where fall-colouring shrubs rarely succeed
