Golden Alexander

This selection is one of the earliest-blooming native perennials, its flat-topped yellow flower clusters appearing in May when little else is in colour, and it's a critical host plant for the Black Swallowtail butterfly caterpillar.

• Flat-topped clusters of tiny yellow flowers rise slightly above the leaves from May to June
• Erect reddish stems add colour and structure even before the flowers appear
• Dry seed heads turn attractive purple in summer, extending ornamental interest after bloom
• Self-seeds to maintain its presence in the garden, short-lived but reliably self-perpetuating
