Naturally found on slopes at higher elevations, in Europe.  Best grown in dappled shade, full shade or in full sun provided they have adequate moisture. Thrives in well-drained conditions and in limestone soil, withample moisture during the spring. Slow to establish.Helleborus nigershould not be disturbed once mature. Self-seeds when sited properly.
