Growing & Maintenance Tips
Like other fruits, raspberries grow best in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil, in full sun. In its first year, a cane produces only leaves; in its second year, it develops fruit. Once the fruit matures the cane dies and should be cut down to the ground to allow the sun to reach newly emerging canes. A 5 cm layer of mulch applied every fall will aid in maintaining moisture, fertility, and help reduce weeds.
Notes
Some newer cultivars of raspberries like 'Autumn Britten' will produce fruit the first year. Pruning these cultivars entails mowing them in early spring. The botanical name for Autumn Britten Raspberry has been updated from Raspberry x 'Autumn Britten' to Rubus idaeus 'Autumn Britten'.
