- Edible red berries ripen to dark purplish-black in June
- Glossy leaves emerge bronzish-purple, maturing to dark green
- Fall colour is yellow to orange-red
- Grows in a more formal shape than canadensis
- Commonly used for naturalizing, woodland/woods edge, specimen
- Grows best in full sun to shade to partial shade
